Law varies and law moves

Most of what people call "the law" is state law, and it differs — sometimes fundamentally — between states. Where an entry describes a state's rule it is an example of an approach, not a statement of what applies where you live. Federal rules apply nationally but are amended, reinterpreted, enjoined and vacated.

Time-sensitive statements are dated in the text and sit beside a link to the primary source. The source is authoritative; this site is not. Where the two disagree, the source wins.

No outcomes, no eligibility

Nothing here predicts how a case, an application, or a dispute will come out, and nothing here determines whether you qualify for a benefit, a visa, a defense, or a remedy. Descriptions of what usually happens describe patterns, not promises.
